EIA stands for Equine Infectious Anemia, a parasitic infestation of the red blood cells caused by a filarial worm carried by mosquitoes. It is a reportable disease, untreatable and incurable - horses known to be infected with EIA are typically quarantined for the remainder of their lives away from other horses.

Symptoms of EIA include: high fever (105 degrees F and up); decreased food and water consumption; a yellow discoloration to the eyes, nose, gums and perineum; a red to brown tinge to the urine; abdominal discomfort and decreased energy.
