You have a few options for the litterbox for your cat after his surgery. My personal preference was shredded newspaper, available free from the bank if you tell them what you need it for. It does nothing for odor control, obviously, but is gentle on tender paws. Just put a ton in the box and be prepared to change it out at least once a day, preferably more as you don't want kitty's paws slogging around in soggy paper!
There is also a pelleted paper litter available from Petco or Petsmart that is supposed to be suitable. I tried it once and did not like it. It's hard to the touch and I didn't think it would be comfortable for them to walk on.
Another thing you may want to do is make sure the litterbox is easy to get in and out of. Your kitty won't want to be jumping in and out for a few days! If necessary, get a cardboard box and cut it so that it's an easy step in/step out.
I would use this for several weeks to a month before returning to a scoopable or clay type litter. Be sure to check kitty's paws to make sure all is healed before switching back.
