What breed is a good dog for a 10 year old boy?

I got my first dog when I was about 10, and she was the best a person could ask for. She was a mix between a chow chow and German shepherd and was gentle and energetic. Though she had her fair share of chewing anything and everything, she was an excellent family dog and a companion for ten years. Any dog that can run and play is good for a young boy. Some breeds that may fit would be labrador retriever or a poodle. Both are friendly and certain types don't shed much. Good luck with your dog search! It's a fun and exciting time.

Any dog would be fine if you train them really well (especially if it's a big dog). I would suggest you get one from a puppy and train it really good. A retriever, Rottweiler, and a German shepherd are my suggestions of big dogs because they just want to please you and are very loyal. If you would want one of these dogs, you might have to do A LOT of research on them. I will add that the reason you will want to get your big dog as a puppy is because you an raise them the way you want and they will know that you are their "pack leader." I'm still trying to get a Rottweiler because I just adore them and they are just really loyal and beautiful!

There probably isn't one "best" dog for the boy, it all depends on the boy, and the family's particular lifestyle. The following dog breed selectors might be helpful, as it takes into account many different aspects of both dog and human, and then selects the breeds that might work for you. Then it's up to you to do some reading on the suggested dog breeds, to narrow it down.

An adult dog is easier for a first time dog owner than any puppy will be. Though amazingly cute, a puppy may be an overwhelming amount of work and responsibility to socialize correctly, and to train. Whereas, adopting an adult who's personality and temperament can be evaluated can be a much better match, right from the start. Many adoptable dogs have already had at least some training, may be house broken, has been spayed or neutered, and in probably up to date on it's shots.

You shouldn't overlook mixed breed dogs. They're often healthier than their pure-bred cousins, and they're every bit as smart, lovable and trainable as a pure bred dog.
