Each are similar in appearance, but you will notice differences in head, neck and shoulder thickness in each. For hundreds of years, breeders crossed variations of bulldogs and terriers to achieve a combination of speed, size and strength for purposes such as bull baiting and bear baiting to unfortunately the vulgar practice of illegal dog fighting. So if a person is interested in becoming a pit-bull owner, do your homework about the parents of the litter. Ask for the pedigree of the blood line to ensure that your pet is from a reputable breeder that is improving the breed and not breeding for profit alone. Do not encourage bad breeding by purchasing a dog from a back yard breeder with no paper work and vet records of the animal. Poor breeding ethics is what has caused such a tremendous population of breeds with genetic disorders and long term health problems.
