Alpaca wool can be used just like sheep wool: it can be spun into yarn or made into felt. It is softer and warmer than most kinds of sheep wool, and does not have as much of a prickly feel against the skin. It is considered a luxury fiber, generally more expensive than sheep wool, and prized for it's softness and warmth.

Llamas are used for:

a) fibre production. Their hair is used for socks, blankets, sweaters, duvets, rugs, and other items.

b) livestock protection. Llamas are well known for their dislike of coyotes and other predators, and their attraction to other animals. They are used for protecting sheep, alpacas, goats, herds of pigs, horses, etc.

c) therapy animals. Some llamas are trained to visit people in nursing homes and hospitals. They are naturally housebroken and very gentle.

d) carrying backpacks. A trained, conditioned llama can carry 100 pounds on its back all day, and their soft, padded feed mean they do not damage the ground they are walking on. Some llamas even carry Golf clubs on golf courses.

e) pulling carts.

f) pasture ornaments. Llamas are easy to care for and require relatively little food compared to horses.
