Whooping cough also known as pertussis is a contagious disease that causes severe coughing. The bacteria that causes whooping cough is gram negative, and hides in the tissues of the human body.
Common causes of a cough include respiratory infections like colds or flu, allergies, asthma, smoking, and environmental irritants such as pollution or dust.
There are many causes of cough and depending on clinical examination some investigations may be required to make a definite diagnosis. But severe cough leading to vomiting should make one suspect whooping cough.

The medical term, pertussis, is what causes whooping cough. Whooping cough is coughing uncontrollably, then gasping for air, which is caused by Bordetella pertussis.

Cough is not a sign of chlamydia trachomatis (the STD) in adults. In newborns affected by chlamydia in the lungs, a hacking cough that doesn't bring up phlegm can be a sign of disease. There is another species of chlamydia, chlamydia pneumoniae, that causes cough.

The smoke does because when you are around a bunch of smoke it makes it harder to breathe which causes you to cough so you can get all the bad stuff out of your system and breathe normally again.
Bordatella pertussis does not cause chickenpox; it causes whooping cough. Varicella zoster virus causes chickenpox.
