The Blue Whale in on the endangered list and there are approximately one to two thousand Blue Whales left. The International Whaling Commission banned Blue Whale hunting in the 1960s. Russia soon followed suit in the 1970s. However there is still illegal hunting affecting the Blue Whale population. Some of the problems the Blue Whale face today other than hunting are warmer sea temperatures and global warming. Whale migration is based on warm/cold trends of the ocean. Not only affecting their ability to know when to migrate but also their food supply with the infusion of fresh water from melting ice caps.

Fishing nets in which the Blue Whale could be entangled and trapped. Pollution, especially PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) which build up in a whale's body and over time proves to be toxic and deadly.

Ocean noise pollution caused by an increase in sea traffic, which affects the ability of whales to hear each other.
