What color capes do guide dogs wear?

Guide dogs are any color a dog can be. Since most guide dogs are German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, or Golden Retrievers, most guide dogs are black and tan, black, chocolate, yellow, or golden.

Most Guide Dogs don't wear jackets, vests, packs or capes. They wear the harnesses needed to perform their duties. The owner can't see the cape anyways.

In the US:

Those service dogs who do wear capes or packs wear either the color of the program that trained them or the color their owner prefers. Hearing dogs are sometimes dressed in blaze orange as a signal to others that the owner cannot hear them.

In Europe, Japan and Australia:

Different countries have different color codes for Service Dog vests. The US does not officially have a policy. However, these are the common colors for International Service Dog vests.

There are three major classifications of service dogs. Guide Dogs assist the visually impaired. Hearing Dogs help the deaf by alerting them to specific sounds. Service Dogsperform other kinds of work such, as mobility assistance or working with the mentally impaired. Professional / Working Dogs are not for disabled users and are not service dogs. But have certain access rights only when on duty, i.e. Police K-9 or customs dogs.

Orange vests typically indicate a Guide Dog (for the blind)

or Hearing Dog (for the deaf) - Burgundy in the UK for hearing dogs.

Red or Blue vests are often worn by other Service Dogs

Blue is usually used for Service Dogs that function for Medical Alert.

Green or Black vests usually indicate other kinds of Working Dogs, like Customs, Police K-9 or Search/Rescue. These animals usually DO NOT HAVE ADA PUBLIC ACCESS PROTECTIONS. Therapy Dogs and ESA Dogs should where green. i.e. A Search/Rescue dog would have no business in a theatre or restaurant as it's not working. However when a Police K-9 is on duty it has full access rights with the non-disabled handler. Once it's off-duty it no longer has the rights.

Remember, Service Dogs are for disabled handlers and have federal protections. Working Dogs are professional dogs for non-disabled handlers.
