A grizzly bear can be either black or dark brown.

Almost a gray or silver color. But you CANNOT go by color; black bears come in those colors too. There are gray, brown, yellow, white, and black black bears. Can't go by size either; there are giant black bears.

You must go by a combination of: Claw length (3 or more inches for grizzlies), hump at the base of the neck on the back, and the lower rear tooth (it'll measure a certain size). The claw length will be the most readily available means of identification. Black bears average about 1 1/2 inch claws.
