Speed, they are a very fast swimmer and can out swim most of their predators. If a shark tries to attack a dolphin, the dolphin uses its snout to hit the sharks gills. If you were a shark, the worst place to get hit would be the gills. Its very painful to get hit there by a dolphins snout.
