It sent them to starvation and made them choose between fleeing and fighting a loosing battle with the US (and Canadian) governments, or signing a treaty and being reduced to staying in reservations as mandated by the federal governments. Without adequate food, their warriors weakened by hunger, and entire clans overwhelmed by the influx of white pioneers and settlers, the Indians had no choice but to comply with the US/Canadian government and sign a treaty to stay in reservations where they would have plenty of food and no risk of white people taking over the rest of what used to be theirs.
