In the desert Arabian horses got food from their owners. Typically they would be fed date's and camels milk. Water was very hard to come by and horses drink more water than camels do, they can also only survive for roughly 72 hours without water. so the camels milk helped to keep them hydrated. They also were likely fed some type of bread and any vegetables that could be spared.
