Caribou have a winter diet that consists primarily of lichens, particularly reindeer moss. At other times when available, the leaves of willow and birch as well as grasses and sedges will be on their menu. It has been reported that they may eat bird eggs, arctic char or even lemmings, and this, if true, represents a big departure from their herbivorous eating habits.
