Chinchillas have an extremely sensitive digestive system. They need a lot of fiber so fresh Timothy hay is suggested daily. This also helps wear down teeth so they do not become too long and prevent them from being able to eat. Their diet should be low in fat and they should NEVER eat sunflower seed or peanuts. If they eat too much sugar or fat they can become extremely overweight which causes Diabetes and death in the long run.
You can give chinchillas fruits and vegetables as treats, but these should not exceed 10% of their daily food intake. They are natural foragers so it is suggested that they are given a coarse mix. Be careful not to over feed or they will only eat the "good stuff." This will keep them from getting all the daily vitamins and minerals they need.
If you are going to change your chinchilla's diet, you need to introduce the new food gradually so that you don't cause sickness in your pet.
