Well the symptoms when he dies are that he quit breathing. But when he's dying (if it like a hamster) his mouth will be open and he will just lay their breathing very hard. IF he is doing this the best thing to do is just suffocate it by putting in a Ziploc in the freezer. It sound cruel but it's the least miserable way. Or take it to a vet....
