Hedgehogs do not have needles. They have quills. Quills are modified hairs, which have hollow chambers all throughout the inside.

They poke you, but they do nothing else. They have no venom, and cannot shoot from their backside. They are, for the most part, completely harmless!

They can harbor bacteria, but regularly bathed animals that are properly handled pose no threat. Be sure to wash your hands after you handle them.
