What do horse vets do?

Vets for horses have to go on call outs, give antibiotics, injections, castrating, operations, etc. But the worst one is putting a horse to sleep...

However, if you become a trainee vet, you can help around the vet's patients, doing check ups, antibiotics, teeth checks, checking the boarded horses- nice jobs really!

Primarily, large animal vets work on cows, sheep, goats and pigs. Some may also work on horses, although equine medicine has developed into a specialty all its own. These vets examine, diagnose and treat large animals on farms.

The primary things would be to do vaccinations, deworming, body condition scoring and preg-checking all the cows. At odd times a vet may have to do a BBSE on a herd of bulls, but most other things that a vet would do for cattle are more or less for individual cattle. These things include C-sections, calf-pulling, BBSE's on bulls, treating scours in calves, diagnosing a death of a cow (or necropsy), helping with a cow that is down with milk fever, ketosis, or temporary paralysis of her back legs, treating a cow with mastitis, etc.
