When I was younger I thought they ate carrots and lettuce and all that until I realized that when I left it out at night my Dad would bring it back in and leave some lettuce leaves on the ground.

Well at Christmas they eat the carrots that children leave out for them (they get allot of carrots! and these last them along time). When the carrots run out they then eat reindeer moss - (see the link below). During the summer they also get to eat some nice sweet grass.
