A helmet with a boot that has a heel are must-haves to be safe and long pants are a good idea too. If you are a more serious rider you should invest in some chaps or half chaps and if you ride english, tall boots and breeches are nice to own. But always, always wear a helmet!

You should also make sure that you wear closed toed shoes (junky tennis shoes, cowboy boots, etc.) NOT FLIP FLOPS! (if your foot gets stepped on by a horse while you are wearing flip flops, it could crush your foot. it sometimes takes all the skin off of your foot. pretty bad, huh? ) oh, and please don't use boots with spurs unless you are a professional.

if you are a new rider, or the people you are with tell you that you need one, you should wear a helmet.

gloves are always good, so that your hands don't get rubbed raw from the reigns

For English riding you're usually required to wear a helmet. For the clothes, a shirt and jeans or a skirt is fine as long as none of the clothes flap, it could spook your horse. You should wear paddock boots or riding boots, or any protective boots with a 1/2 inch heel or more. Non-gridded boots are best, and stable rubber boots are not good for riding. For Western riding, again you can wear a skirt, jeans, and t-shirt as long as it doesn't flap. Cowboy boots look best for riding Western but you can use anything you use for English riding. Sometimes Western riders are not required to wear helmet.They normally wear cowboy hats. Junior riders should always wear a helmet, either an approved riding helmet or a bicycle helmet. Inexperienced adult riders would be advised to wear a helmet.

On your first time riding a horse i would recomend wellies , coat and leggins.

Jodphurs are what most people wear when they have been going for a little while.

REMEMBER:Get your self some gloves cos you could hurt your hands!

My opinion is that jodphurs do let you move around more freely but they arent a MUST HAVE!

So just get what you prefer there is nothing you absolutley NEED!

A t-shirt a cotton t-shirt is really good as it allows you to move and it breathes too

Jodhpurs or if you don't have jodhpurs jeans will do and if you don't have jeans just pants NO SHORTS alot of people say wearing shorts while riding is not good for you as you will rub against the horses belly (and you could get itchy legs too)

And boots if you don't have boots in-closed shoes or runners NO SANDALS AND THONGS ECT as a horse ways enough to squash your foot

And for horses it depends because different horses need different things but to ride a horse you need tack (bridle and saddle) and remember stirrups and stirrup leathers too
