A stray dog is taken to the shelter. They are a LITTLE luckier than the "owner surrenders" because they get a few days for the owner to come claim them. After that they are evaluated. If they are sick or have any behavioral issues they are usually euthanized as the shelters don't have the funding for solving these problems or for the liability they would bring adopting them out. The others get a few more days to find a home. If not they too are euthanized. If they are lucky enough to be in a shelter that works with rescue they may be pulled by rescue and adopted out that way but only a small percentage of strays that show up at a shelter are this lucky. Some advantages are; being any color other than black (black lab or pitt mixes are so common they stand little chance of adoption) being very young, small breed, well behaved, very healthy and social although due to overpopulation these dogs are euthanized all to often as well. Pure breds, puppies, previously loved pets and all the rest die in shelters in alarming numbers, please spay/neuter your dog and keep them for life. They are not disposable commodities!
