What does a colby pitbull look like?

I'm assuming this question is refering to the Colby line of American Pit Bull Terriers started in1889 by John Colby. Colby's Primo was chosen to be the first standard for the American Staffordshire Terrier for the American Kennel Club. Both Ameican Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers were once the same breed (hence the standard being based on a Colby dog). However, due to selective breeding over the last 70 years they have been bred to different standards resultiing in many people recognising them as two distinct breeds. Another view on this is that one is a working strain (APBT) whilst the other is a show variant (AST). It's worth doing your ownresearch and forming your own opinion. To throw into this the fact that APBT and AST were mainly bred from UK and Irish Pit dogs which later became known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier the debabte gets even more complicated!!! Back to the Colby dogs - Colby dogs have always been well respected for their temperment, gameness and conformation. Making them in many peoples view the ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier. Unlike the modern stereo type of a APBT Colby dogs were not huge with massive heads - infact they were fit, well muscled but still agile dogs that were capable of a full days work their influenceing factors were temperment, gameness and abilty whilst conformation came well down the list! Personally i think with most breeds this would be a good idea. Especially in the Staffordshire Bull Terrier where some current breeders are producing dogs not respecting the Staffords of old! Most American Pitbull Terriers are not very good with other dogs, Now some dogs can get along well with close supervision from the owner.

But a good rule of thumb is never leave your APBT loose together and never ever trust your APBT not to fight. If you leave them loose together some day more than likely a fight will break out and if you do not know how to properly separate the dogs when that happens things can get pretty ugly and one or both of your dogs can get seriously injured and even die.

Another good piece of advice is to invest in a parting stick and learn how to use it the proper way and always carry it with you when your out and about with your APBT, Contrary to what several of the animal rights groups or people who just plain hate the APBT will have you believe, They are not pieces of "dogfighting paraphenlia" And are in fact something every responsible APBT owner should have in case a fight should happen, But you will also find times when a parting stick is needed to just get a toy away from them or a bone.

They have strong jaws but not jaws that will lock, And at times you can actually injure the animals teeth if you try and just yank something away from them. Where as if you have a parting stick and know how to use it you just easily take the toy or bone away from the dog and know that you have not caused damage to your dogs teeth.

They are well proportioned and balanced. Pitbulls are muscular and colbys are no exception. Colbys tend to have a lot of white in their color with brindle patches. a few can be brindle and white chested.

Colby pitbull bloodline come from the late 1800's. It is a bloodline I like and it is a good line. Colby is a registered bloodline.

Any bloodline is good to mate your colby bloodline dog. If you have a chance to get a colby one, even better.
