Well this will depend slightly on how early or late into the pregnancy she was. If the mare was at the 300 day period of her pregnancy it's termed abortion or aborting the foal. The mare may have bagged up (Swollen) mammary glands, possible waxing or dripping of the milk/colostrum, and vaginal discharge/bleeding. This can be caused by fungus, bacteria, and viruses along with genetic mutations, high stress levels, fetal death due to umbilical strangulation, or even lack of proper nutrition for the mare.

If the foal is born alive after 200 days of pregnancy it is considered a premature birth, whether the foal survives or not.
