If your cat is otherwise perky and acting normal, it means you don't have the rectal thermometer inserted properly. This is typically a problem when inexperienced owners try to take their cat's temperature - the thermometer has to remain in the rectum for several seconds and it must be inserted to the proper depth. If you aren't sure, ask your veterinarian for a demonstration and explanation.

If your cat is not acting normal, it means your cat is severely ill and about to die if it hasn't already- you should take your cat to the vet immediately. Unfortunately, with a body temperature this low, your cat may be dead already. Normal temperature for a cat is 99.5-102 degrees F; 96.3 is dangerously low.
