What does it mean when a kitten's eyes are weepy and sore?

basically the stuff could just be gunk, if your cat is long haired and/or flat faced its eye might be irritated from fur coming into contact with the eyes cornea, and thats just a reflex to get stuff out of the eye. wash your cats eyes every day just to be sure bacteria doesnt get into the eye and infect it.

however, if your cat is sneezing or you notice pus take them to the vet because this could suggest something like conjunctivitis secondary (infection of the underside of the eye) or upper respiratory infection, aka URI. if its URI your vet will usually give you antibiotic drops for the eyes or oral medicine.

also monitor your cats drinking because if theyre drinking (and peeing) heaps this is a sign that they could be ill with Diabetes or something, so take them to the vet as well. if theyre eye is closing up this is a sure sign theyre in pain and you should take them to a vet as well.

i hope that its nothing serious! this happened to my cat too, luckily it was just normal gunk :3

• Yes it is an eye infection. But it is probably likely it is conjunctivitis, or it may have a cold in it's eye. Kittens and any animal which roams outside, are prone to these infections and are usually easy to treat. Only in extreme cases does it lead to blindness, if it is left untreated for a long period of time, letting it develop to a more serious case. Don't call a vet straight away. My advice would be, to wrap the kitten in a blanket or towel. Get it into a comfortable position, like cradling it in your arms. Then get some tissue and run it under a WARM tap. Slowly and carefully dab the infected areas, with the tissue. keep the treatment consistent, 3 times a day, for as long as it takes. Though after a few days you should see a difference. REMEMBER: When dabbing the eyes, remember to keep wiping the eyes with a dry piece of tissue, so that water does not remain in the eye.

• It has an eye infection. Call a vet right away, as this (in extreme cases) can lead to blindness and is HIGHLY contagious. The vet may want you to not bring the cat in due to the risk of it spreading. It is easily treatable with antibiotic drops, obtainable from a vet. My reasoning behind being so aggressive with the treatment in that feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR) (a deadly disease) can first present with weepy, crusty eyes. In this physician's opinion, leave the treatment to a trained professional, a veterinarian. Home treatment can just prolong the illness.

Your kitten probably has an upper respiratory virus. Your Veterinarian should check over your kitten. She might also have something in her eye, but it is probably an upper respiratory virus. Take your kitten in to be checked out by your Veterinarian
