"Arid" refers to regions that receive very little rainfall, while "semiarid" regions receive slightly more rainfall but are still characterized by low precipitation levels and dry conditions. Both arid and semiarid areas typically have limited water resources and are prone to droughts.

An arid region, such as a desert, receives less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain per year. A semiarid region receives between 10 inches and 20 inches (500 mm) of rain per year on average. They are not the same thing.Semi-arid is less dry than "dry and arid" which means dry and dry. "Semi-" means half, so something semi-arid is only half as dry as something which is arid.
