Slowly and painfully. It is actually really cruel. They taunt it, torment it and torture it for hours before finally killing it. First they chase it around for hours, catching it and then letting it go and then chasing it again. Then they start torturing and maiming it, and then finally they kill it.

I've never actually watched the whole process from beginning to end, because I am not hardhearted enough to be able to watch a mouse get slowly torn apart limb from limb before my eyes. My cats usually kill mice when I'm asleep (because that's usually when the mice come out, when the house is quiet and everyone's in bed). But I've had to pick up the remains that are scattered around in the morning: a back foot, a tail, a head, pieces of intestines and other internal organs.

I've seen them just beginning to play with mice, cornering them and chasing them and carrying them around in their mouths. But at that point I normally rescue the mouse and take it outside.
