What dogs are best with cats?

The best way to find a cat-friendly dog is to get a puppy from a household where it grew up with cats

BUT

not a hound, terrier, guard dog or herd-dog - they have inbred characteristics that might later cause problems, especially if the cat is not too laid-back.

Some cats get on better with dogs, too, so the whole question needs to be seen as a whole.

Most dogs will accept a kitten or a very young cat very quickly. I had two dogs and introduced the kitten. The kitten had it's fur standing on end, but by the end of the day my two dogs were grooming the kitten and now I have two other dogs (the other two unfortunately passed away) and I call them 'The 3 Amigos!'

Put your dog on a leash and let the cat get use to the house and then pet the cat, pet the dog (to leave the scent) and then put the scent of the dog back on the cat. I found having a high scratching post in my front room a handy thing as the cat could climb to safety very easily if she felt threatened. Dogs and cats get along more than people think. Give it a go. The dog and cat will work it out.

if a cat and a dog grew up in the same household, they will probably be morefriendly toward each other.

If you have a grown cat, and decide to get a grown dog, like a German Shepard or something of that size, the dog will scent the cat and want to rip it apart.


However if you get a smaller dog, like a Chiuaua, the dog might be more afraid of the cat, but the cat will still recognize it as a dog, and leave it alone.

I'd have to say either the Labrador Retriever or a border collie cross. They get along great since they have such a good nature.

If you get a dog and you already have cats make sure its either cat trained or get it from a puppy (otherwise they won't like each other).

None. All cat breeds and Dog Breeds have equal chances. It depends on if they where socialized together at an early age or not. If not, don't try. Period. Trust me, it's not worth it. If they where, then you can try having a cat and dog together.

any type of terrier is probably a no-go, Pugs are one of the most chilled out dogs so they would probably go well.
