Hyenas are essentially scavangers and will eat almost anything that is dead. They are also hunters and will run down and kill any prey they can catch, preferring the young, elderly and infirm members of herds of herbivores (grazing animals) such as gazelle. Hyenas have occasionally been known to attack humans if the person appears to be too young, or too ill or weak, to fight back.
