There are 17 different types of penguins. Most of the species of penguins live near the continent of Antartica. Some of the well known penguins are: a)Emperor, b) King, c) Adelie, d) Black-footed, e) Rockhopper and e) Macaroni.

MYTHS: One important fact that most people don't know is that polar bears do not eat penguins. Polar bears and penguins don't even reside on the same continent. People think that all penguins look the same, but in reality that is not true. Like rockhoppers, they have bright feathers on their foreheads, and adelie penguins have white stomachs and black bodies. (They look like men wearing a tuxedo!)

A PENGUINS DIET: Penguins eat lots of different kinds of food. It really depends on the penguins. Emperor penguins dive deep into the ocean to get nice, big, juicy, salmon. The Emperor penguin's favorite food is squid. Little Blue penguins skim the top of the water to get small krill. Adelie go to the middle to get tuna and shrimp.

PREDATORS OF THE PENGUINS: The creature that penguins are most terrified of is the leopard seal. Some predators don't always eat penguins. For example, the killer whales. They only eat them occasionally when they have nothing else to eat. (Killer whales sometimes feed on weak leopard seals!) Penguins fear leopard seals more when they hide in the water hoping to catch a careless penguin. Adelie penguins usually push other adelie penguins in the water to see if leopard seals are hiding in the water. No other types of penguins push each other into the water. They are called leopard seals because they look like overgrown seals and they have spots all over their body. They are also called leopard seals because they are fierce just like a leopard when it comes to catching penguins for their food. (Sometimes, leopard seals try to break the ice from underneath to attack humans.)
