January 1, 2000 - Although many businesses had experienced problems related to the fiscal year 2000, there were only scattered effects from the Y2K bug, a problem caused by the use of two-digit dates in computer programming.

January 30, 2000 - The St. Louis Rams (formerly of Los Angeles) win Super Bowl XXXIV 23-16 over the Tennessee Titans, the first Super Bowl won by an NFL team that played its home games in a domed stadium.

January 31, 2000 - Alaska Airlines flight crashes into the Pacific Ocean off California, killing 88 passengers and crew. The malfunction of its horizontal stabilizer reveals a previously understated critical design weakness in the MD-80 series of aircraft, which also affected the earlier DC-9 aircraft.

February 11, 2000 - A bomb explodes in front of the Barclay's Bank across the street from the New York Stock Exchange. There were injuries but no deaths.

April 3, 2000 - A ruling is handed down against Microsoft Corporation for violations of US antitrust laws.

April 22, 2000 - Six-year-old Elián González is taken into federal custody, having survived a boat escape from the island that led to his mother's death. He is returned on June 28 to his father in Cuba.

July 25, 2000 - One of the last Concorde aircraft still in passenger service crashes into a hotel outside Paris, after a fire on takeoff, killing all aboard. The Concorde is taken out of commercial use three years later.

September 15 to October 1, 2000 - the 2000 Olympic Games are held in Sydney, Australia.

October 12, 2000 - The US Navy destroyer USS Cole is attacked by Al-Qaeda suicide bombers in Aden, Yemen, damaging the ship and killing 17 of the crew.

November 7, 2000 - Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected US Senator from the state of New York, becoming the first First Lady to be elected to public office.

November 7, 2000 - George W. Bush was elected US President in a narrow victory over sitting Vice President Al Gore. The recounting of votes in the state of Florida was suspended by the US Supreme Court on December 8 and the case Bush vs. Gore was decided on December 12, 2000.

November 26, 2000 - The British Columbia Lions defeat the Montreal Alouettes 28-26 to win the Grey Cup at the CFL Championship game in Calgary, Alberta.
