Elephantiasis is a condition that is due to a parasite. The parasite wiggles into your lymph vessels and blocks the flow of lymph back into circulation and causes swelling in the body. The swelling continues to grow and can come debilitating.
Blockage of and lymph vessel is keeping the fluids (usually blood, blood that is in need of cleaning) from entering the lymph node. This blockage causes additional blood that needs to be delivered to the lymph node for filtering to back up, kind of waiting for it's turn. This back-up of blood, (and sometimes other fluids), is what causes the swelling.
Lymph nodes swell as a normal immune response to infection or inflammation. This swelling occurs as the lymph nodes work to filter and trap viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens. The increased activity of immune cells in the lymph nodes causes them to enlarge.

This is due to lymph node swelling, as a result of breast cancer that has metastasized to lymph nodes in the "tail" of the breast tissue in and near the arm pit. However, before becoming overly concerned about a swelling in the arm pit, check with your physician first. There are many more benign causes than malignant causes.
