Just as the name implies a performance bred horse is one bred through selection to perform well at a specific task well.

The AQHA has several types of quarter horses, those bred for racing, reining, cutting, western/english equitation, jumping and roping. These bloodlines have distinctive characteristics that lend themselves to specific performance tasks...hence the term performance bred.

Thoroughbreds are performance bred to run...and of course, they have the Performance Horse Registry that is designed to promote TBs and TB crosses

outside of the racing venue.
