Captive breeding and habitat preservation are the two complimentary methods for warding off extinction. Habitat preservation is self-evident, predators need range and prey. They can not live bunched together. Captive breeding is often necessary because over the last century populations have become inbred leading to vulnerability to disease and genetic defects. Cheetah is classified as CITES I: Threatened with extinction. Due to habitat loss, hunting for skins and hunting by farmers in retaliation whose livestock was killed.There is a Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia, which cares for rescued cheetahs and educates the public and ranchers on cheetah conservation. The Cheetah Conservation Fund's goal is to ensure the long-term survival of the cheetah and its ecosystem through a multi-disciplined and integrated conservation program of research and education.
