A hound is a canine that is bred specific for hunting in the company of men. Hounds can be divided in their method of hunting: sight, smell, or a combination. For example a Greyhound is a sighthound and a Bloodhound uses his nose.

A dog is a canine that is bred for other purposes like guarding, herding, protecting or hunting on it's own, usually to kill vermin. The diversity is very great and the mentioned examples are just a few. The reason for calling some canines hounds and other canines dogs is not always very clear.
