Unlike baby names, which people expect to be told almost at the time of birth (along with the baby's weight, which has, apparently, to be in pounds), one can have a baby animal around for a little while before naming it.

This really works well because after a few days you've had the chance to observe the personality of your new pet and are able to name it appropriately.

As your pet grows and people ask how it came to be called cuddles, or puddles, or burglar, or bigfeet, you can give a much better reason than just saying, we were trying to be cute.

Bear in mind that if your pet is a dog, which you'll no doubt train to answer to its name, you should pick a two-syllable name that ends on an upward inflection; this is easily recognized by puppies. Examples are, Rexie (Rex-eee), Baby (Ba-beee), Timmy (Tim-eee), Burglar (Burg-laaah), and so on.

This naming principle also works well with human babies, easily getting the child's attention when you call. Of course, you won't want to use names such as Burglar or Puddles for your baby. We hope.

Other pets, such as cats, can be called anything you like because they - especially cats - don't come when you call.
