Esquire is derived from the Latin Equestrianus- Horseman- by extension, Knight. actually a Squire ranked below a Knight as a sort of cadet or Knight-In-training. Then we will speak of, say an Equestrian statue of Wshington, ( in Washington Park, in Newark- it is not clear if he is in the process of getting on, or off, his mount! there you have it- Caballus is the other Latin word for Horse- from this we get Cavalier, Cavalry, chivalry, and so on. Whoa!
