While there is only one rottweiler breed, there are different "types" out there. Essentially they are different bloodlines, and tend to be based on region. The "German" type, and essentially European type, tend to be a little stockier in look, with richer color and a blocky head with a more bulldogish snout. To be used for breeding, these dogs not only have to conform in type, but also be certified for working ability. They may be harder indisposition and/or more energetic, which is required for working dogs. With the "American" type, these dogs tend to be larger and/or taller (leggier). Generally they'll have slightly less blocky heads with a longer nose. These dogs tend to be more companion oriented and not work oriented, meaning they may have wonderful, soft dispositions or may be weak of nerve. They generally do no have the working ability of the German type, but are bred to be more flexible, with many becoming service dogs, for example. As German breeders are more organized, they tend to have less health issues than American dogs, of which any back yard breeder can breed. So though only German Rottweilers are those born in Germany, the German type Rottweiler has become very popular in America, being advertised as the better type of dog. Keep in mind there are excellent and poor examples on either side, and you don't necessarily want a 'better' dog, but a dog that suits you and your life style the most. Look for a well known, responsible breeder and do your research.
