There are several contenders:

  • Arctodus, the short faced bear of the North American Pleistocene, fits this description. See Link. This bear weighed about 1800 lb and stood 8 to 9 feet tall (about twice the size of a Grizzly Bear. It died out some 12000 years ago
  • The ancient polar bear called the Tyrant bear Ursus maritimus tyrannus. It was larger than the Arctodus and was comparable to the huge Megistotherium, the largest mammalian carnivore ever to walk the earth.
  • C.R. Harington, Canadian Museum of Nature reports the winner! A prehistoric South American giant short-faced bear tipped the scales at up to 3,500 pounds (1,600 kilograms) and towered at least 11 feet (3.4 meters) standing up, according to a new study.
