What is the main cause of danger to the manatees?

Man. The evidence of multiple scars show the manatee's and motor driven props do not go hand in glove. They sustain numerous injury from recreational boaters that ply the waters of their habitat. The other threat is environmental,

re-routing and altering watershed basins, encroachment into prime habitat,

and accumulations of toxins in it's food chain.

It's a rough life for manatee's these days, they want nothing more than clean water & kelp to much on while basking in the Florida sun. These manatee's might be safer if they relocated to "gated" communities.

There are many human activities that threaten the lives of manatees, but one of them is most known: boats. Manatees enjoy shallow waters, because the food they eat is plentiful there, and when there are shallow waters, there are boats as well. Although manatees have strong ribs, they will be seriously injured by a boat, and if the boat goes fast, it will probably kill the manatee. In fact, some parts of sea in Florida are forbidden to boats because of manatees.

Boats are harmful to manatees. Manatees (or sea cows) like dwelling in 3-7 feet warm waters. They swim slow and can be drifting fairly close to the surface and when a boat passes over, the propeller can cut into their backs and flippers. They leave horrid wounds, healing to retched scars, or killing the poor sea cows.

Litter is harmful. If the manatee digests a piece of human garbage, it can cause problems with the aquatic mammal. Or the manatee could choke on the trash.

Manatees can't survive extended times in cold water. They live in warm waters. And they can only stay out of water for 30 minutes. If out too long, they could die.

Manatees don't have any natural predators. They do share the same habitat with sharks and alligators, but are too big to be taken down. And since sea cows are plant eaters and don't threaten a shark or alligator's food, there is really no reason to kill them. But small manatees or calves can be taken as prey.
