There is no one breed that is the "best behaved dog". Any dog can be a great pet, if it is raised the right way and properly socialized and trained. Before buying a puppy (or adopting a dog) make sure you research what the breed needs and it's general temperment is-there will always be exceptions though.

Be sure that you don't adopt say, an Alaskan Malamute (a big dog with a heavy coat who needs a lot of exercise) if you live in an apartment in a warm city. The dog will begin to misbehave because of lack of exercise and no one will be happy.

Or, adopting a Neopolitan Mastiff because you want a guard dog or "manly" dog, if you have no experience--these dogs are massive, independent and strong willed. They need a experienced owner who knows how to handle them.

Make sure you are adopting the dog for the right reasons, that you have the time to train and exercise, and that it fits your lifestyle. Then you'll have the best behaved dog of anyone!
