Sequences from both dogs and wolves showed considerable diversity and supported the hypothesis that wolves were the ancestors of dogs. Most dog sequences belonged to a divergent monophyletic clade sharing no sequences with wolves. The sequence divergence within this clade suggested that dogs originated more than 100,000 years before the present. Associations of dog haplotypes with other wolf lineages indicated episodes of admixture between wolves and dogs. Repeated genetic exchange between dog and wolf populations may have been an important source of variation for artificial selection.

the original, original, bull breed was the bull and terrier, they no longer exist. they where like a mastiff breed with a terrier/bulldog. they were supposedly very aggressive. so to answer your question the only breed of pit bull is the American pit bull terrier. its roots can be traced back to the 1800s. to narrow it down further you should look up Colby pit bulls. they have possibly the oldest purest line of ANY dog breed in the world. the dogs that they had 150 years ago look the same as the dogs today. I am lucky enough to have one and i got him from Mr. Colby himself he lives in mass. about an hr from me. This dog is great, hes beautiful great with kids ,smart, stable, funny as hell. ill never own another breed or line of dog again. hopefully i can pass this pure line and breed down to my kids and keep it going endlessly.

The records show Mr. John Colby as the oldest bloodline recorded but the breed comes much longer than the records.
