What is the process for studding out dogs?

You start by earning some titles to his name.. either show or working titles. He also needs health clearances thru places like OFA, optigen, BAER.

If he's worth studding, owners of b*tches will find you in the show ring or at working trials.

First you prove your dog's breeding worth. Serious people looking for a stud for their dog are going to look for the following: Genetic health testing clearances (offa.org)
Show titles (Champion, Grand Champion
Working titles (dependent upon breed; obedience, agility, weight pull etc)
Pedigree
Legitimate registration (not Continental Kennel Club or any of that)
Fertility There may be more, depending on breed and what the owner of the female is looking for. Once you've proven that your dog is an exceptional example of his breed, that he's genetically healthy, that his temperament is sound, that he is conformationally correct, etc., you will need to draft a contract. Customers are going to want to know that you are guaranteeing them a live litter or a repeat breeding if it doesn't take. You will also want to request a negative brucellosis test or risk rendering your stud sterile. In short, there is just as much to studding out a dog as there is to breeding a female, depending on how serious you are about it. Some people walk down the street looking over fences for stud service. Reputable people who care will be looking to breed the best to the best.

I think it all depends on what type of dog you have and if it's a pure breed or not. for instance, I have a 3 year old Juan Gotti Blue Pitbull with a 27" head who weighs roughly 100lbs; and I've been offered between $800 to $2,000 to stud him out, as well as first pick of the litter. I'm sure that doesn't help much, but that's my two cents.

You need to join a club for that dog breed, and to show him. Showing a dog is the only and best way breeders will be looking for future stud dogs. This can only be done if your dog is purebred with a great pedigree. The dog also needs to be health tested, usually eyes, hips and elbows. The type of health tests depend on what breed the dog is. Please note that health tests are NOT the same as health checks, where the vet just looks the dog over. Tests require several hundred pounds/dollars.

Also, a stud service is not just sticking two dogs together and hoping for the best. You need to be prepared to get very intimate with your dog (sometimes they will need help), and to calm a dog down if either female or male become aggressive or fearful. Mating two dogs, if done incorrectly and without firm handling, can lead to both dogs injuring themselves. It may be best to find a mentor at first, to limit these risks.

If your dog doesn't have papers and not health tested it would be very irrisponsable to use him for stud service.
