A dog's weight varies greatly by breed, with the heaviest breeds outweighing the lightest ones by a factor of more than 20 to 1. According to the American Kennel Club, a Pekingese, for example, should weigh less than fourteen pounds. By contrast, a male Siberian Husky weighs between 45 and 60 pounds (20-27Kg) -- a female about 10 pounds less. A Shih Tzu should weigh in at 9 to 16 pounds (4-7Kg). A short-coat Chihuahua named "Ducky" holds the Guinness record for the smallest living adult dog at 1.4 pounds (about 635 grams).
Way up at the heavy end of the scale is the Neapolitan Mastiff. Males can weigh as much as 150 pounds (68Kg), females as much as 110 (50Kg). Newfoundlands tip the scales in this range as well. The breed generally accepted as the "largest" dog in the world is the Old English Mastiff. Adult males typically range between 160 and 230 pounds (72-104Kg). Guinness currently lists the largest living dog as "Kell", an English Mastiff female which weighed in at 286 pounds (130Kg) in 1999. An Old English Mastiff named "Aicama Zorba of La-Susa", owned by Chris Eraclides of London, England set the record for the world's largest dog ever at 343 pounds (156Kg) in 1989.
The size of a dog can be measured by factors other than weight, of course. The Guinness record for the world's TALLEST dog is held by "George", a Great Dane owned by Dave and Christie Nasser. George is 43" (109cm) from paw to shoulder and weighs in at 253 pounds (115Kg). Guinness lists him as the tallest dog who ever lived.
Due to this wide variation between breeds, it is difficult to propose an "average weight of a dog" but it's a good guess that most people's idea of the "average dog" probably weighs between 30 and 45 pounds (14-20Kg).
