Deer are widely believed to be herbivores and although the majority of their diet includes plants, fruits, acorns and grasses mounting evidence indicates that deer should really be considered Omnivores as they have been regularly observed eating small birds actually taking them from the nest .

Deer have also been observed raiding eggs from nests ,eating a variety of small rodents ,frogs and insects. They have even been known to eat dead fish they have found. Some deer have been observed eating carrion including large dead animals (even other deer) .It has even been reported that deer have consumed baby rabbits.

Previously the idea that deers were anything other than vegetarian have been the subject of myth. Although the deer's diet is primarily that of a Herbivore they should be considered are opportunistic Omnivores; meaning that if they can get animal protein they will even resorting on occasion to killing small animals.
