Transporting dogs in crates in a heated baggage compartment is sometimes inevitable, but it is not an ideal way for a dog to travel. Without sedation, they will probably be somewhat scared and bored. Some airlines have "dog flights" where dog crates get to be in the cabin with their owners--that would be better. Talk to your vet about air transportation and what can be done to make it easier on your dog.
Better yet is to leave your dog with a responsible, doting dog-sitter while you're gone.
