Any 'clumping' cat litter will do. If you want to safe money just get plain 'clumping cat litter' and every time you change the cat box spring some baking soda in it (to get out any odors) and mix together. Walmart has good prices on clumping cat litter.

I use Feline Pine litter. It is rather expensive, but it lasts longer than other cat litters; it does not smell, or it does not smell bad; it is easily scoopable. I have to keep my cats' litter box in my bedroom, and I really appreciate a cat litter that is not offensive! I believe that I may save money by buying a cat litter that does not have to be replaced very often.

Fresh Step is easily the best. It has odor eliminating carbons, it is scoopable, and it clumps. Carbon is used for water filters, air filters, and fish tank filters. WOOHOO FRESH STEP!!!!!

Definitely the crystal kind (like Clear Choice Crystals). The crystal kind also lasts longer. Before I switched to the crystal kind, I had to change the litter once a week (I have two cats). Now I only have to change it every two to three weeks.

The other cool thing about the crystal litter is that you don't have to remove big, messy clumps of urine. With the crystal kind, the urine goes to the bottom of the pan and is absorbed by the crystals, so you only have to remove the feces. And the urine doesn't smell at all, even though it stays there, on the bottom of the pan, because it gets absorbed by the crystals. After two weeks, you just dump all of it into a garbage bag and take it out.

Additionally, you could try using carbon-based deodorizing sheets, which are sold at many pet stores. These sheets fit into the vent on the lid of the litter box, and prevent odor from escaping. I use them, and they work really well for me, at least.
