What should you do if your dog is limping and it looks like it has a broken paw?

Take Your Dog to a Vet

• Broken bones must be treated by a vet, as they may not heal straight, and could develop and infection. Constant pain is terrible for your dog as well.

• Good grief. What would you want to do if you broke your own leg? Think it over for a few days? Of course not. You'd go to a doctor. Well, a vet is a doctor for animals. If this doesn't give you a clue, please find the dog a good home with someone else.

• It above statements are correct in saying get it to a vet immediately. However, before bringing it to the vet ''if at all possible'' make sure to stablize the leg. The simplest way to do this is to take a dish towel, pillow case, shirt, blanket, or a piece of an old sheet you don't care about and wrap it around the limb as you would a sling and tie it close to the body. '''Tie it around the hip area if it is a rear limb and around the neck and shoulder area if it is a front limb'''. This can be difficult to keep in place especially if the dog is being uncopperative, so don't worry if it does not work for you. Also ''if at all possible'' make sure that the animal remains calm and does not use the limb. Again, do not leave this kind of injury untreated; get the dog to a vet ASAP!

ONLY sling the animals broken leg if its already in that position and staying! DO NOT MOVE the dogs leg forcfully. If its sticking straight out leave it there. use a stiff object such as a broom handle or long wooden spoon. place it against the broken leg and tape it above and below the break. do not tape over the break. And for gods sake take it to the vet or shoot it.

• In addition, be aware that even the best dog in the world can bite if it's in pain. To prevent that, and before splinting or moving the dog, if possible, either muzzle the dog or use some vet wrap, strips of toweling or something similar, wrapped around the dog's muzzle, but make sure it's loose enough to allow the dog to breath while still preventing the dog from opening its mouth widely enough to bite.

• Do the same as you would for yourself! Get your pet professional help. Take him to the vet.

My dog broke her leg twice, a fun thing to do is when the vet gets a cast, ask them to wrap it in cotton cast stuff- ( I don't know what it is but it's the stuff that wraps around the cast and it's a creamish color) then you can decorate it. That's what I did.

You dog may have sprained his leg, either jumping or banged into something. Is your dog very old? He could be getting arthritius.

Try to massage the area, see if the dog will let you do this, that way you can tell how bad any damage may be. If he lets you massage it no doubt its a sprain. Can you tell where the limp is coming from, his knee, hip, or foot, something in his paw could make him limp. Especailly cheat grass, its sharp and will set in between their paws.

sometimes a sprain resolves itself in a day.

I am not a vet and suggest a vet opinon, but if your dog does not lick it, you can apply some ben gay to the sprain and massage it, depending on the dogs weight give 1/2 aspirin 50 lbs or whole aspirin 70+lbs WITH FOOD. See if that helps some, that's the only quick fix for pain i can think of if you can't see a vet.

If its cheat grass remove it, and and go over the area with some soap and water or witch hazel if you have it, or wipe with a tucks pad.

If your dog continues to limp, go to the vet, they can prescribe a drug called meloxicam (ask for the rx tablets you can get at Walmart, you break these in 1/2.) Don't let them try and sell you the liquid Metacam which is meloxicam but it cost $ 90.00 a bottle.

I would not get rimadyl either from the vet, upsets stomach and they end up taking a tagamet with it.

how could u say that! i hate u even tho im only a kid u shouldn't do that i want to be a vet when i grow up and your a big disgrace to the animal world what u should do is or what the cause is that do u have wire in your yard he/she could have got into the wire and cut it or broke it or he/she could have bit it too hard check on his legs feel his leg that hes limping on and feel another leg see if one of the bones r different or go to the vet and see what it is

Well, i know much about this because this happened to my dogs before. So, honestly you should not touch it yourself. Contact a vet quickly, and that is just about all you need to know. Hope this helps! :)

The last poster was absolutely correct. Some dogs can bruise the pads of their feet if you've been a rocky area (even gravel), but it's best to have the vet take a look and soon! Marcy Please take him to the vet and ask for an X-Ray.
