What should you do to get skunk smell off your dog?

Here is a great method: 1 Quart of 3 percent Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 Cup Baking Soda

1 Teaspoon of Dish Soap (breaks up the oils in the skunk spray... the baking soda and peroxide take care of the smell).

This will fizz when mixed so use it right away. It will explode if you try to store it, so make only what you will use. You can always make more if you need it. Use like a shampoo. Work into the dog's coat thouroughly, but be careful of the dog's eyes. Use a wash cloth around the eyes. Rise thouroughly. This works great and it is really cheap to make. One application de-skunked a dog hit at point blank range!!! Jerry

There is no way to get it out. You need to throw the blanket away and buy a new one. Trust me. If a person is sprayed with skunk odor, the clothes go in the trash and the person goes in the tub for a miserable hot scrub with the most fragrant soap in the house! Just count yourself lucky it was just the blanket and not the dog!!

At least 1x every summer my dog gets skunked. Last time somehow my husband got the spray rubbed onto his pant leg which then was put into the dirty clothes with my baby/kids clothes. Needless to say a stinking mess. However if make sure the clothes are extra dry and stick them into a trash bag, pour in a decent amount of cat litter and then some of that Arm & Hammer sprinkle on carpet deoderizer. Tie it up and let it sit for a few days, roll it around now and then to coat everything. After that hang it out on the line to make sure all the cat litter is removerd(don't want that getting into the washer). A couple of hot washes and all the stuff was clean and fresh smelling. I did this because 10 dollars on cat litter and carpet fresh was cheaper than replacing all the clothes. However a trip to Good Will and you could buy some new dog blankets for under $10.

Mix Together:

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

Rub into your pet's hair, then rinse

with plenty of tap water.

Discard leftover solution.

Warning: Do not make this solution ahead of time.

It produces oxygen and will explode in a closed container.

Do not store this solution in a sealed container.

Note: On long haired pets make sure the solution gets down to the skin.

We have had this happen on more than one occasion. *sigh* We found a non-toxic product called Quick n Brite and decided to give it a try. I didn't like the mixtures I found online that you had to make sure they wouldn't explode or get in my dogs eyes. Quick n Brite is actually an all purpose cleaner, but when we talked to a representative at the company they were very confident that it would work and it did! I included a link to their blog but basically you mix the concentrated Quick n Brite solution with water and spray it on your pet (or carpet or whatever else it gets onto) and let it sit then hose it off. My dog allows it to soak in for about 10 minutes before we rinse and we found that the longer it sits the better job it does. We also use this product to clean our dog (when he is not sprayed by skunks!) and it is great to make his fur soft and doesn't dry out his skin. Would recommend ordering this product as it is far better than anything we have tried.
You can not totally get the smell out but... give the dog a bath in Tomato Juice, yes you heard me. The juice has an acid in it that will really cut the smell. Soak the dog in the juice, (as many cans as you can get) in the tub. Rub it all over the dog. Be careful because EVERYTHING the smell comes in contact with will also smell like skunk. So use a portable tub if you can, a large bucket of some sort. After you rinse the dog off with clean water, use rags you can throw away to wipe off the dog. The acid in Tomato juice has been slowly reduced over the past few years with new hybrid tomato production. It does not do an effective job anymore. It is also very costly.

Here is a way that really works and works very well for less than five dollars.

One 500ml bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup of Baking Soda

1 Tablespoon of dish soap or pet shampoo

Mix this together (do not dilute with water) and (do not shake in a closed container) pour this mixture into a spray bottle.

Spray all over dog and rub into the fur. Concentrate on the ruff and head but please note* DO NOT SPRAY INTO THE EYES, rinse eyes with water if any gets in.

Have clean rinse water on hand.

Allow the mixture to work for about 5 minutes ( do not rinse yet) re-apply and work into the fur a second time. Rinse the dog well.

We keep these ingredients on hand always. It has never failed to work , even when

one or all three dogs come home dripping with skunk bile.

This also works for things the dogs may roll in like dead fish or animal decay. Unlike the old Tomato juice remedy, this leaves the dog smelling wonderful.
use a special shampoo and make sure to take it several showers and also use like febreze spary on it around the dog
