When a mare is ready for season, she is considered "in heat" or "in oestrous." A way you can test if your mare is in season is to get a male horse (a stallion is preferable over a gelding) and bring him near the mare. If she lays her ears back and kicks at him, she is NOT in season. If she relaxes, spreads her back legs a little, and lowers her butt, (aka accepting the stallion), she is in season.

Side note: Just because a mare is in season DOES NOT mean that she needs to be bred.

How soon after foaling is a mare likely to come into season?

Mares come into a foal heat within a week or 10 days after foaling. In the wild, it's not uncommon for a stallion to breed with a mare in foal heat, however a mare may be reluctant because of the foal's presence. She might not show any signs of heat either.

When do mares ovulate in their heat cycle?

In the cold months many mares show no signs of heat. But as the days grow longer and the temperature climbs mares have more obvious signs of heat. Every mare is different but they have a cycle about once every 4 to 6 weeks on average. Some mares have cycles closer together, some not as often. If the mare is bred and becomes pregnant she will have no more heat cycles until what is called 'foal heat' after her foal is born.

Can horses still show signs of season in pregnancy?

Does a horse cycle after been bred?

How do I tell if my horses are mating?

If you have mares and stallions running together during the breeding season (late spring and summer) there's a pretty fair chance that the mares will get pregnant. Mating is normal behaviour. Loads of people have seen mares being bred and they think that having her tied down and protesting the whole time is normal. This is a sign that something is wrong. A mare that is comfortable with the stallion and ready to mate will stand quietly for service and will not attack him as many people believe. You can tell when a mare is on heat and ready to breed to within a few days because she shows pretty obvious behavioral signs - looking interested in the stallion, frequent urination, holding her tail up and out, and winking constantly, or turning the flaps of the vulva in and out. When she has access to a stallion she may walk up to him, back up to him, sniff him and give other signs that she is very interested - if she's doing this and you want her in foal to that stallion - leave her there!Another answer...The Male gets on top of the femeales back and starts trying to penetrate the vagina with his penis and move around. basically you cant miss it. hahaa.x
