The American Kennel Club or AKC list the dachshund within the Hound Group. The familiar dachshund descends from the cross breeding of hounds and terriers to hunt a variety of game animals. However, in America, the dachshund hunting abilities are seldom fostered. They are often acquired to be family pets or companion dogs. As such, their terrier heritage becomes pronounced while their hound instincts are suppressed. That is, as family or companion dog, they behave more like terriers then hounds.

This has lead to some dachshund enthusiast wanting the AKC to reclassify the dachshund as a breed of terrier. Therefore, it would be listed within the Terrier Group. That would be erroneous. The dachshund is a true hound that are competent hunters, if given the opportunity.
